You come home after a long day of work, turn on the TV at 5 p.m. and watch the local news. Make and eat dinner, then check the news at 6 p.m. and catch the national network right after. Then, maybe you watch Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy. Sound like you?
Probably not. That doesn’t sound like anyone in the year 2022. What’s more realistic is coming home around 7 p.m. after sitting in traffic and picking up dinner on the way home, whatever is easiest and cheapest at that moment. Maybe a quick workout or checking in on social media, scrolling through the phone while turning on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or any of the countless other streaming networks, and then going to bed. Doesn’t seem like there’s much room for news, or the PR that comes along with it, huh?
Well, there is more than you think. Every news outlet has social media these days, and chances are that during the average 262 times a day, you’re checking your phone, some news articles pop up. Every organization has a social media presence now, too. Meaning, their PR pieces, social posts, blogs and other content are right at your fingertips constantly.
The modern world has certainly changed the way we take in news and public relations content, but if anything, it has increased their presence. People will always crave to know what is going on in the world and their society around them. Content is just shifting toward a focus online. These are interesting trends to follow if you’re looking to get your business, product, or project on air or online.
According to Pew Research and Comscore data, of the big-name outlets studied, their main domains saw 29 million visitors in the fourth quarter of 2019. That increased in 2020 to 32.1 million (there was a pandemic and election year that could have boosted this). However, the time spent on the sites dropped from 2.13 minutes to an average of 1.95. So why does this matter?
Well, this shows more people are continually getting online, searching for the content there, and seeking out news outlets. A great way to get thousands, if not millions, of eyes on your product is to get into one of these articles online. These are usually trusted sources for their audience, and the content is made to share online.
Maybe getting a reporter to cover your topic isn’t working or isn’t feasible. Get a public relations team to try and help this. They have all the connections in the industry to make pitches straight to media. However, this can be costly and expensive.
Another option, hire freelancers to write content like crazy. Make blog posts, podcasts, social posts and more. Create your content with freelancers and have them make the news for you. This is your own PR team. You can find freelancers to write your press releases, blog content and more. Every time your product is on the screen of the scroller who got home at 7 p.m. and might turn on Netflix, is a chance for a sale, or at bare minimum, a reminder you exist. Most people skip over the advertisements they see TV anyway. Take advantage of the digital world we live in, and get your content out there. Make your own news and reporters and TV outlets will come to you with advice on your topic.
